D.J. Newbill Works Out With Utah Jazz Four Days Before Graduation

D.J. Newbill was in Salt Lake City on Wednesday working out with the Utah Jazz.

With less than two months until the NBA draft, Newbill is making time to fly across the country just in time for graduation.

“I’m going back to my hometown to Philly,” Newbill said in a post-workout interview with NBA.com. “I graduate on the ninth. I’m going up to school to walk.”

Newbill, who averaged 20.7 points per game in his incredible senior season, didn’t think he’d get a call to workout with a team this far before the draft. His agent told him not to expect anything until June, so the Jazz’s call surprised him. It didn’t seem to disappoint him, however.

“This is a Hall of Fame program,” he said, noting he played against former Michigan point guard and current Jazz player Trey Burke during their time in the Big Ten. “I know about the type of guys they like.”

Newbill said the workout began with a series of measurements and vertical testing before moving on to sprints, bench presses, shooting drills, and ultimately full-court three-on-three.

“A lot of competition out there, some great drills, different than I thought it would be,” he said. The guard said he had to adjust to playing at such a high elevation. “I’ve never played in Utah before, I warmed up to it.”

It’s been a strong pre-draft season for Newbill. He led Cherry Bekaert to victory in the Portsmouth Invitational, an elite draft showcase, posting 19 points, seven assists, and five rebounds in the championship game. DraftExpress tagged him as the No. 97 prospect in the upcoming draft.
