Do a Good Deed, Ride the Bus for Free
Anyone who's taking a CATA bus today or Thursday can ride for free by simply making a food donation.
The Centre Area Transportation Authority is offering a free ride for anyone who donates a canned good or other non-perishable food item when they board.
CATA and the State College Area Food Bank organized the "Food for Fare" program. All proceeds will benefit the local food banks and their distribution activities for those in need this holiday season.
Lonnie Smith, who has driven a CATA bus for 16 years, said the program is more popular among customers who commute into the borough from outlying residential neighborhoods because they are more likely to pay in cash for their fare.
"It does help," Smith said. "All in all it's a good program."
Last year, the program collected 803 pounds of non-perishable food.
CATA is also participating in Toys for Tots by collecting unwrapped toys for children at its two offices: 2081 W. Whitehall Road and 108 E. Beaver Ave.
Toys can be dropped off until Dec. 16.
