East Branch Road Bridge Project Starts June 7

by on May 29, 2012 6:00 AM

Major bridge work on East Branch Road is scheduled to start soon, but not until the kids are out of school.

The bridge spans Slab Cabin Run on East Branch Road between College Township and State College Borough.

Once school is out on June 7, East Branch Road will close and a detour will be in effect through November, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

The detour will use Route 3011 south (East Branch Road),  Atherton Street, Boalsburg Pike, U.S. Route 322 west at the Oak Hall interchange, Route 26 north at the State College interchange and Pike Street at Houserville.

Workers will replace the bridge with a new box beam structure, providing a smoother and safer travel. Preliminary work, including signing, surveying and fence removal will get underway this week, according to PennDOT.

Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor for the $1.5 million project, which has a completion timeline dependent on weather and scheduling.

PennDOT expects all work to be finished by the end of the year. The Slab Cabin Run bridge was built in 1941, is 81 feet long, and carries average daily traffic of 9,400 vehicles, according to PennDOT.
