Elections Board Appoints Alternate Attorney After Conflict of Interest Allegations

The Centre County Board of Elections has appointed an alternate attorney to serve as its source of legal advice after its previous solicitor was accused of a conflict of interest.

Elections Office Director Joyce McKinley says the elections board appointed Dan McGee of the State College-based Delafield, McGee, Jones & Kauffman law firm to serve as the board’s solicitor through the November elections.

He was appointed to serve instead of regular solicitor Louis Glantz, who was accused of having a conflict of interest by the Centre County Democratic Committee.

Glantz, who also serves as solicitor for the county commissioners, co-hosted a fundraiser for the two republican incumbent commissioners back in September, which led to the democratic committee’s allegations of a conflict of interest.

Glantz has told StateCollege.com he brought the event to the attention of the elections board before the fundraiser was held and indicated he would step aside for the appointment of temporary solicitor if the elections board felt it necessary.

McKinley says the board met on Thursday and determined an alternate solicitor was necessary. In her time with the elections office since 1993, there has never been another alternate solicitor appointed due to a perceived conflict of interest.

McKinley says the election board solicitor is on call all day during elections day to offer legal counsel on any issue that may come up, ranging from the distance signs must be kept from polling places to problems with voting machines.

In the event of a dispute about the results of an election, a judge from the Centre County Court of Common Pleas serves as an election judge to resolve such political issues.
