Elmwood Street Bridge Set to Reopen

by on September 12, 2019 4:30 AM

After being closed for preservation work for nearly two months, a bridge in Lemont will reopen on Thursday, according to PennDOT.

The Elmwood Street bridge spanning Spring Creek, between Gas Light Circle and Pike Street, is expected to reopen to traffic by the end of the day. Once the bridge is reopened, the detour, which directed drivers to use Pike Street and Route 26, will be lifted.

The project, which began on July 18, removes the bridge from the county's poor-condition list. It involved milling the existing asphalt overlay, a new concrete deck and barrier, paving, guide rail installation and pavement marking.

Work initially was expected to be completed at the end of August, but was extended because of the timeline for concrete curing.

The 57-foot long Elmwood Street bridge was constructed in 1959 and carries more than 3,300 vehicles a day.
