FEMA Awards Additional Funding for Purdue Mountain Road Repair

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide an additional $573,000 to repair the damage to Purdue Mountain Road in Benner Township, state Sen. Jake Corman announced on Friday.

Parts of the road were completely washed away during heavy rainfall and flooding in October 2016, and it has been closed from the Bellefonte entrance since. A federal disaster declaration was issued in December 2016 and FEMA subsequently dedicated $1.2 million for the repairs.

Township officials had hoped the road would reopen by this winter, but after heavy rain in November 2017, it was found that parts of two areas of the road had failed and a plan for repairs was submitted to FEMA and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

Corman said in a release that the additional funds "will help repave other locations that were damaged during the storm, but were not identified during the initial inspection."

The funding also will be used to improve the flow of runoff away from affected areas with the installation of additional drainage features.

"The damage to Purdue Mountain Road caused a major disruption for the entire community, and it would have been extremely difficult for the township to repair this damage without additional financial support,” Corman said. “I am thankful that FEMA agreed to not only help repair the affected areas, but also dedicated resources to ensure those areas are better protected against future damage.”
