Ferguson Township Supervisors Discuss West College Design Project
A meeting of the minds between Ferguson Township Board of Supervisors members and members of State College Borough Council could come to fruition to discuss the West College Avenue Streetscape Design project.
The final report and concept plan from T&M Associates was given to the board regarding the streetscape design project at its regular meeting on Monday night.
As previewed by the board's agenda, the purpose of the plan "is to form the basis and identify what is feasible and realistic to achieve the streetscape in the Terraced Streetscape District.
"This final plan is the result of a six-month study that included three public meetings to develop a concept plan for West College Avenue from Buckout Street to Blue Course Drive.
"The project, if fully implemented, has an estimated cost of $6,632,800. Funding for the project has not been identified."
A representative from T&M Associates discussed some of the plan's details, including changes to sidewalks and making the streets easier to use for pedestrians and motorists alike. At this point, no minor details such as light fixtures or types of trees to be planted have been decided on.
The case study looked at Newtown Township in Bucks County, Pa., because the makeup of the area is similar to what architects would be dealing with renovating West College Avenue. The entire presentation was made available online by the board.
Supervisor Bill Keough said he would like to see a meeting set up between State College Borough Council and the board because space included in the design project does lie within the Borough, something other supervisors agreed with.
"State College is the one that started this study and thought it would be nice if Ferguson Township joined ... [We] came up with a plan and State College decided they didn’t want to proceed," Supervisor At Large George Pytel said. "Ferguson [Township] continued to go on this."
Pytel said he'd like now to come together with Borough Council to tell them what they plan on doing.
A meeting date is to be determined.
