First Friday to Kick Off Military Appreciation Week

A week of military appreciation events in State College and on the Penn State campus will get started on Friday with a special edition of the Downtown State College Improvement District's First Friday.

The monthly celebration in downtown State College will be a salute to the military, from 5 to 9 p.m. on the 100 block of South Allen Street. Events for Military Appreciation Week, hosted by Penn State and State College Borough, will continue through Nov. 12.

First Friday will begin with a performance by Fuse Productions. At 5:30 pm, the American Legion Post 245 will have an honor guard on site for a presentation of the colors, followed by an a cappella performance of the national anthem by Arietta, Penn State President Eric Barron and Downtown State College Improvement District Executive Director Irene Miller will deliver remarks.  Other performers throughout the evening will include Arts School of Central PA, Centre Heritage Singers, Dan & Galla and Rodeo Serenade

Participating businesses will donate a portion of their sales during First Friday to the Penn State Military Student Fund.

Free cupcakes, flags, and patriotic glow apparel will be available at the Downtown State College booth, where a jumbo Thank You card will be on display for all to sign. The Dear Hero Program will have a table set-up to receive donated items for care packages and help people write thank you letters to active military members.

Military vehicles will be on site to explore and booths will include Spring Creek Trout Unlimited, Reboot Combat Recovery, Omega Delta Sigma, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Pennsylvania Military Museum, Nittany Crossfit, Centre County Veteran’s Affairs, PYP Studio, South Hills School of Business and Technology, Jersey Mike’s, Old State Clothing Co. and the Freedom 5k for PTSD.

Nittany Entertainmen will provide an LED light show.

 Sunday, Nov. 5

Vietnam Lecture Series

2-4 p.m., Pennsylvania Military Museum, Boalsburg

Robert Doyle, a former Navy intelligence officer, will discuss treatment of U.S. military personnel who were captured and held as POWs in North Vietnam until their release in 1973.

Monday, Nov. 6

James Clapper

5:30 p.m., Sutliff Auditorium, Lewis Katz Building, University Park

The Honorable James R. Clapper, the former director of national intelligence under President Barack Obama, will be the first guest speaker of Penn State's new Center for Security Research and Education. The event is free and open to the public.

Wednesday, Nov. 8

Adam Hartswick

11 a.m., Foster Auditorium, Paterno Library, University Park

U.S. Army Sergeant and Wounded Warrior Adam Hartswick will be the featured speaker. A State College native and Penn State student, Hartswick lost both legs to an IED explosion while he was serving as a combat medic in Afghanistan. The event is free but tickets are required for entrance.  Contact Mary Fisk at [email protected] or 814-863-0440 to reserve a ticket.

Friday, Nov. 10

Veterans Day Ceremony

11 a.m., Old Main Lawn, University Park

The Penn State Student Veterans Organization will host a Veterans Day Ceremony in front of Old Main, beginning with the posting of colors by Penn State’s Joint Service ROTC Honor Guard and the singing of the national anthem. Speakers will include Retired Navy Vice Admiral James Houck, Penn State’s Veterans Fraternity President George Oliver and Penn State’s Military Law Caucus President Chuck Deibel. The ceremony will conclude with a 21-gun salute and the playing of "Taps."

Saturday, Nov. 11

8 a.m.

Military Appreciation Tailgate and Football Game

Penn State will host Rutgers at noon in Beaver Stadium for the 6th Annual Military Appreciation Game. Prior to the game Penn State will host a tailgate from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Bryce Jordan Cener with food and entertainment. Tickets will be distributed to those individuals that received football tickets through the Seats for Servicemembers Program. Any other veteran who is interested in attending the tailgate will be granted access to the event on game day.

Sunday, Nov. 12

11 a.m.

Freedom 5k for PTSD

Penn State's Aerospace Studies Student Organization hosts the 2nd Annual Freedom 5k for PTSD is a joint service supported philanthropic effort to raise money and awareness for PTS, one of the leading epidemics impacting our nation's veterans. The 5k will benefit Lone Survivor Foundation. Details and registration can be found here.

Sunday, Nov. 12

1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Military Appreciation Basketball Games

The Penn State men's and women's basketball games at the Bryce Jordan Center will be Military Appreciation Games. The Lady Lions face Drexel at 1 p.m. and the Nittany Lion men tip off against Farleigh Dickinson at 5 p.m.
