Downtown State College will mark the first Thursday in June with a variety of public "First Thursday" attractions this week.
Appalachian Outdoors, 123 S. Allen St.; the Corner Room, 100 W. College Ave.; and For Men Only Hair Salon, 125 E. Beaver Ave., are among the businesses scheduled to have special offerings on Thursday.
Organized through the Downtown State College Improvement District, First Thursdays are designed to put a spotlight on the downtown. Here's a rundown of some highlights set for Thursday:
- Fourth annual Ladies' Night, Appalachian Outdoors, 123 S. Allen St. Free massages, appetizers, drinks, prize giveaways and special discounts will be available from 6 to 9 p.m. as a sign of customer appreciation.
- Balloons and half-price burgers, Corner Room, 100 W. College Ave. The iconic downtown restaurant will serve up full burgers for half the usual coin. This special will be in effect from 3 through 10 p.m.
- Spiritual Solutions to Problems, Christian Science Reading Room, 218 S. Allen St. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., this session will explore the Bible, science and health "to find spiritual solutions to life's challenges," a preview reads. Free.
- Complementary beer and half off all hair products, For Men Only Hair Salon, 135 E. Beaver Ave. This offer will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. A full-service visit including a haircut, neck shave, shampoo, scalp massage, facial and hand treatment will be $30.
- Art on the Move, HUB-Robeson Galleries, Old Main lobby, University Park. Paintings by Karl Leitzel, founder and director of Landscape Artists International, will be on display from 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. Leitzel creates landscapes in oil and acrylic and has painted images of a number of local musicians, plus scenes of the Centre County Grange Fair. Free.
- Photography of Laura MacLean, Student Health Center, University Park. MacLean's photos, to be on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., represent a project focused on observations of everyday life, all meant to reveal wonder and beauty. Free.
- Ireland landscapes, Ion, 209 W. Calder Way. Works of local artist John Mangan will be on display from 6 to 10 p.m. Free.
- Customer Appreciation Night, Jezebel's Boutique, 366 E. College Ave. From 5 to 8 p.m., wine, appetizers and a 15 percent store-wide discount will be available.
- Complementary wine and a free eyebrow waxing with a $24 cut, Lipstick Salon and Color Lounge, 135 E. Beaver Ave. These offerings will be in effect from 10 a.m. through 8 p.m.
- "Life's Silvered Strand: George 'Daddy' Groff's China," a Penn State University Archives exhibition, 104 Paterno Library, Curtin Road. This exhibit will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free.
- Four pretzels for $2, Pretzel Factory, 124 S. Allen St. This special will be in effect all day.
- Tussey Mountain Moonshiners' live bluegrass, Schlow Centre Region Library, 211 S. Allen St. The award-winning band will play from 7 to 8 p.m., bringing original songs and traditional bluegrass music along with old-time, folk and some progressive tunes. Free.
Parking is free after 6 p.m. Thursdays at all municipal street meters in State College; in the municipal parking lots on Fraser Street, South Allen Street and West Beaver Avenue; and in the McAllister parking deck.
Balloons will help direct pedestrians to the venues hosting First Thursday events.
