Flood Watch Issued with Rain, Brief Warm Up on the Way

With rain and a quick rise in temperatures that will melt snow and ice, the National Weather Service at State College has issued a flood watch for portions of central Pennsylvania, including all of Centre County.

The watch is in effect from Thursday night through Saturday night.

Intermittent rain is expected to begin Thursday evening with rainfall totals up to an inch and a half before the precipitation turns to a wintry mix Friday night into Saturday morning.

The rain alone may not be enough to cause flooding issues, but it will occur at the same time as a significant warm up, a week after frigid temperatures gripped the region and caused local waterways to be covered with ice.

"This volume of water running into the streams and rivers may lead to large rises on the waterways," according to NWS. "The ice may melt initially and break up due to the force of the rising water. This could also lead to ice jam flooding as the ice collects at constrictions, clogging the flow and backing up onto land."

In the State College area, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 40s on Thursday and upper 50s on Friday, according to AccuWeather.

After that, however, it's back to below-freezing temperatures. Saturday in State College will see a high of 26 degrees with 1 to 3 inches of snow after the precipitation changes over. After dropping into the single digits on Saturday night, AccuWeather forecasts a high of 18 and a low of 4 on Sunday.

Highs are expected to remain in the 20s through most of next week.
