Former Backup Quarterback Tyler Ferguson Transferring to Louisville

It’s already been reported that backup quarterback Tyler Ferguson transferred from Penn State, but it looks like he’s finally made a decision about where he will head. As first reported by Mark Haas of Ferguson’s hometown, the quarterback will enroll at Louisville in the spring semester.

He initially intended to transfer to Western Kentucky after meeting Bobby Petrino but his plans changed once it was announced the coach would return to his old job as head coach of Louisville. Ferguson will follow Petrino and begin classes at Louisville on Monday.

“After he got the job at Louisville, he called me very shortly after that,” Ferguson told “So, yeah, I’m going out there to Louisville now.”

Ferguson was a junior college transfer before coming to Penn State, making his start at College of the Sequoias. He will have to sit out during the 2014 season due to NCAA transfer rules but still has two years of eligbility remaining.

After competing with Christian Hackenberg for the starting quarterback position, Ferguson played a limited role for the Nittany Lions. He played in five games, completing 10 of 15 passes for 155 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. The prospect of playing behind the freshman phenom Hackenberg was the leading reason behind Ferguson’s departure.

Ferguson is joining a team with no clear successor for the starting quarterback position. His new Louisville team finished 12-1 last season with quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who recently declared for the NFL draft. Once Ferguson is eligible, he should have a good shot at competing for the job.
