Foundation Launches Public Phase of Memorial Field Campaign

The State College Area School District Education Foundation recently launched the public phase of its $1.5 million Campaign for Memorial Field.

Memorial Field is currently undergoing a $13 million final phase of renovations. The project includes new home-side bleachers with additional seats, restrooms, pedestrian plazas and permanent concessions. New locker room facilities will be added under the bleacher area as well. A concession plaza will be constructed on the former site of the Nittany Avenue Building, where the basement was retained for use with the locker room and classroom additions.

SCASD Education Foundation's campaign to support the upgrades has already raised $700,000. Galen Dreibelbis made a $500,000 donation and the new plaza near the entry at Nittany Avenue will be named in his honor. Donors who asked to remain anonymous until a later date have donated $200,000 and will have naming rights for the home team locker room.

Other naming opportunities are available.

"Giving is open to individuals, families, alumni, graduation classes, businesses and other organizations in the community," according to a foundation news release. "Most gifts to the campaign are payable over five years and will help implement the renovations plans approved by the school board."

A "Legacy Locker Program" also will allow donors of $1,000 or more to have their name, graduation year and sport played added to a plaque on individual lockers in the home locker room. Pledges to the program can be paid over two years.

The site along Fraser Street and Nittany Avenue has been used as an athletic field since the 1920s and a stadium was constructed there as a Works Progress Administration project in the 1930s. It's now home to State College football, soccer, field hockey and lacrosse, as well as community events.
