Frame Lifted For Control Tower At University Park Airport

on May 27, 2010 1:30 PM

The hulking metal frame of the new air-traffic-control room at University Park Airport has taken its perch, some 80 feet above the runways.

Just after 6 a.m. Thursday, workers used a crane to hoist the substantial frame atop the new traffic-control tower at the airport, in Benner Township. Lifting the frame structure took less than 10 minutes, though securing it on the tower appeared to be a more intricate process.

The airport is spending $3.9 million in local, state and federal funds on the air-traffic-control tower, the first at the 50-year-old facility. Construction is scheduled to finish by November; the tower should be operational by January 2011.

Its mission is to improve safety, efficiency and the airport's ability to draw aviation operators, airport leaders have said.
