Free Parking in Downtown State College to End in August

by on June 26, 2020 6:59 PM

Free parking at on- and off-street spaces in downtown State College will continue until the beginning of August, but some additional regulations will go into effect next week.

The borough has suspended parking operations and allowed for free parking since March 14 to help limit the spread of COVID-19 and help local businesses adapt their operations for pickup and takeout.

While free parking will continue through the month of July, a two-hour time limit will be in place at street meters from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Monday. The Allen Street and Beaver Avenue parking lots and McAllister Deck will have three-hour time limits. The three-hour time limit will not be applied at McAllister Deck to permit holders.

The regulations are being enacted "to assist local businesses and ensure turnover in high demand parking areas," according to a borough press release.

Beaver Avenue, Fraser Street and Pugh Street parking garages will remain free with no time limit through the end of July.

Staff will continue to enforce the 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. restriction at parking meters only.

"This will help ensure people are not storing their vehicles overnight and for staff to complete routine street sweeping and maintenance," the borough news release said.

Two-hour time restrictions will resume in residential neighborhoods on July 6. Commuter zones adjacent to downtown will allow for parking with no time restrictions from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Normal parking operations, including regular meter and garage charges, will resume on Aug. 3.

Permit holders will be contacted in July about resuming permits and their payment schedules. Parking permits will also go on sale to the public starting on July 24.
