Giant Announces Recall of Ice Cream Bars

by on January 10, 2018 3:52 PM

Giant alerted customers on Wednesday to a voluntary recall of three ice cream bar products sold in its stores because of the possibility of listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The products, also sold in partner chain Martin's, were recalled by Fieldbrook Foods Corporation and include 12-count Giant Orange Cream Bars, 12-count Giant Arctic Bars and 30-count Polar Express variety packs. The best by dates on the packages are Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2018.

Giant and Martin's have removed the products from sale. No illnesses have been reported.

"Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease," the alert said. "Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy."

Customers who have purchased these products should discard unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant or Martin’s stores for a full refund.
