Global Connections Discussion Group Aims to Help with 'Making Sense of the American Experience'

by on December 12, 2017 9:00 AM

Global Connections, the Penn State-affiliated nonprofit that supports international students and visitors and promotes cultural understanding, has begun hosting weekly discussion groups to help people from other countries who are living in the area learn about various issues in American society.

"Making Sense of the American Experience" is hosted every Tuesday by Bob Persiko at the State College Municipal Building, and topics range from education programs to gun violence. Persiko aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for dialogue while bridging the gap between cultures.

"You can be a foreign visitor or student here on campus and never really connect with American life," Persiko said. "You can end up being with your own group of people speaking your own language. To truly integrate them into the society, they need to have a constructive way of doing that."

Persiko encourages more participants to get involved -- both American and international -- to bring together different viewpoints about issues in society.
