Huntingdon Apartment Fire Kills One

on November 01, 2007 6:47 AM
A fire at a Huntingdon assisted living center killed one resident and routed one hundred others from their apartments late Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities say the fire began in a second floor room of the DeForrest Apartments at 9th and Mifflin Streets. The nine story structure housed more than 100 elderly, and all were quickly evacuated, except one who, according to borough fire officials, died in the apartment where the fire began.

A dozen volunteer fire departments from as far away as Blair and Bedford counties responded. Huntingdon Fire Incident Commander James Fouse said, when he arrived at the scene, “the only thing on my mind was to get all those people from those nine floors.”

The American Red Cross and Huntingdon Emergency Management officials assisted those evacuated in getting motel and or hotel rooms for last night, because fire officials would not permit the residents to re-enter the smoke and water filled structure.

A State Police Fire Marshall will investigate the cause of the blaze.
