Inaugural Centre Film Festival a Success

Inside Philipsburg's historic Rowland Theatre, last weekend's inaugural Centre Film Festival brought together amateur and professional filmmakers and movie fans from around the area.

The festival also included live music and workshops, an event for filmmakers to learn new skills and bridge generational gaps.

Artistic director Pearl Gluck, a filmmaker and Penn State professor of film and video, said the festival accomplished its major goal.

"The dream was to have different generations speak to each other and it came true," Gluck said. "Even the master classes that were intended for teens, people of all ages came and they wanted to be part of it."

Gluck said her favorite part of the festival was curating the films, as it created multiple interpretations of the movies.

"The art of curating, for me, is trying to find a conversation between films. Sometimes people pick up on that and sometimes they find their own connections, which is a beautiful thing," Gluck said.

One of the more unique ways to foster a conversation between generations was state Rep. Scott Conklin impersonating Elvis Presley at the festival's closing ceremony.

Gluck wants to make sure everyone involved knows this is just the beginning of the Centre Film Festival.

"Right away we'll make sure everyone realizes they're not part of something that just ends, that this is really just the beginning," she said. "We're going to go ahead and start building on all this amazing energy that was created."
