Incumbents and a Newcomer Win Local Races for State House

Three state House incumbents representing parts of Centre County are returning to Harrisburg for another term, while a newly elected representative turned a district Republican for the first time in nearly 30 years.

In the 171st District, Rep. Kerry Benninghoff, R-Bellefonte, won his 12th term, defeating Democratic challenger Erin Condo McCracken of Millheim. Benninghoff won 59 percent of the vote to McCracken's 41 percent for the district representing parts of Centre and Mifflin counties. In Centre County, Benninghoff had 55 percent (13,941 votes) to McCracken's 45 percent (11,292).

Scott Conklin, D-Rush Township ran unopposed and won a seventh term in the 77th District, which includes State College, Ferguson Township (partial), Patton Township (partial), Huston Township, Philipsburg and Rush Township.

In the race for the open seat in the 76th District, Republican Stephanie Borowicz defeated Democrat Mike Hanna Jr. of Lock Haven. The seat had been held by Hanna's father, Democrat Mike Hanna Sr., since 1991. Borowicz, of Wayne Township, narrowly lost to Hanna Sr. in 2016 in a district that has been trending Republican.

Borowicz won 54 percent of the vote for the district representing all of Clinton County and part of Centre County. In Centre County, the 76th District includes Benner Township, Boggs Township, Burnside Township, Curtin Township, Haines Township, Howard, Howard Township, Liberty Township, Marion Township, Miles Township, Milesburg, Snow Shoe, Snow Shoe Township, Union Township and Unionville.

In the 81st District, incumbent Rep. Rich Irvin, R-Spruce Creek Township, easily won a third term, garnering 62.5 percent of the vote for the districting representing parts of Centre and Mifflin counties and all of Huntingdon County.

Irvin defeated Democratic challenger Rick Rogers (34.5 percent) for the second consecutive election and Libertarian candidate Joseph Soloski (3 percent).

In Centre County, the 81st District represents Ferguson Township (partial), Patton Township (partial), Halfmoon Township, Port Matilda, Taylor Township and Worth Township.
