Interim Leadership Named as Easterly Parkway Elementary Principal Set to Leave for New Position

Two retired State College Area School District administrators will lead Easterly Parkway Elementary School on an interim basis after current principal Michael Maclay leaves for a new position this month.

Maclay notified the district in December that he would be leaving to take a teaching position in the Mifflin County School District, SCASD spokesman Chris Rosenblum said. Principal at Easterly Parkway since 2012, Maclay was previously assistant principal at Park Forest Middle School for four years.

His last day as principal will be Jan. 19.

Retired Assistant Superintendent Michael Hardy and retired Principal Linda Colangelo will be recommended to the school board as interim principals beginning Jan. 22. They will both spend time with Maclay prior to his last day at the school to ensure a smooth transition, Superintendent Bob O'Donnell said in a letter to families.

"Both have an impeccable reputation in the district and are well known by many of the Easterly Parkway staff, and will bring a strong skill set and listening ear to the Easterly Parkway community," O'Donnell said.

Hardy was assistant superintendent for SCASD from 2007 to 2016 and had a long career as an educator and principal at Pennsylvania schools. Colangelo, a longtime educator in State College, has been a teacher and principal in the district at Matternville, Ferguson Township and Gray’s Woods elementary schools.

Both met with faculty after school on Friday and will be introduced to classes next week, when Assistant Superintendent Vernon Bock also will talk to students about Maclay's upcoming departure. Hardy and Colangelo will be available to talk to families at the school's next PTO meeting in February.

"While we are sad to see Mr. Maclay go and greatly appreciate his service to the district, we will begin the search for the new Easterly Parkway principal next week," O'Donnell said.

The position will be advertised locally and nationally with the goal of having a finalist meet with the school board in late February or early March. Board approval will be required for the hiring.
