James Franklin Has 'All the Plans in the World' to Stay at Penn State

James Franklin says he plans on returning to Penn State for the foreseeable future.

The Nittany Lion head football coach offered up an unprompted statement to a small media contingent following practice on Wednesday evening.

"I got asked a question yesterday about another school and tried to keep the focus on Maryland like I always do, and the next opponent," Franklin said. "That didn't go over very well so... I didn't feel like it was appropriate to talk about another school or another person's job status, so that's why I addressed it the way I did.

"Obviously, I have all the plans in the world to be here and be here for a long time, I just wanted to address that because it became something that I did not want it to be and did not intend it to be."

Franklin was asked on Tuesday during his weekly press conference about speculation he would be a top target for a still yet-to-be-vacated head coaching job at USC.

“First of all, it’s that time of year, where all this stuff happens,” Franklin said at the time. "It’s that time of year. It’s the crazy, mad time of year. We’re focused on Maryland completely, 100 percent. I don’t even think it’s fair or right to be talking about that job from everything I understand about it. We’re completely focused on Maryland.”

USC plays Notre Dame this weekend to close out the year and it is widely anticipated that the Trojans and athletic director Lynn Swan will part ways with current head coach Clay Helton. Helton's buyout is reportedly in the neighborhood of $14 million, Franklin's is $1 million per his contract signed last summer.

And if Franklin intends on staying at Penn State for at least another year, that ought to become evident sooner rather than later.

Penn State closes out the regular season against Maryland on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Beaver Stadium.
