by and on February 20, 2014 11:10 AM

Most people knew Jay Paterno had political aspirations, but few could have predicted his first race would be this large.

The former Penn State assistant coach and son of Joe Paterno unveiled a website today that indicates he’s running for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania on the Democratic ticket.

“Paterno spent over two decades as an educator and coach and now serves as an executive director of a start-up non-profit charity. His experience includes a commitment to public service on boards of charities and a deep involvement in politics on the local and national level,” the website reads. “As a married father of five Jay has a passion for the issues that face Pennsylvania’s working families today and the issues that face the children of our Commonwealth in the future. He will bring visionary leadership to Harrisburg to represent all the citizens of our commonwealth.”

This is the first week candidates can circulate nominating petitions. He’ll need 1,000 signatures from Pennsylvania voters, including 100 from five different counties, in order to have his name appear on the ballot for the May 20 primary.

Request for comment from Paterno was not immediately returned.
