Jay Paterno on ESPN: Americans Should 'Wait for Due Process' in Sandusky Case
by on January 09, 2012 9:39 AM

In a televised interview with ESPN's Tom Rinaldi, Penn State quarterbacks coach Jay Paterno said he doesn't "really believe anything yet" about the claims and counterclaims surrounding former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

"I think it's the responsibility of us as Americans to wait for due process to happen, to wait for the facts to come out," Paterno said.

The interview, which runs nearly seven minutes on the ESPN website, features a number of Paterno's remarks related to the ongoing upheaval at the university and the state of his father, former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

Asked why he believes his father was fired, Jay Paterno said: "Again, I don't really know -- because I wasn't in the room."

He said the university trustees, which decided to remove the elder Paterno, "may have had facts. I don't know what they had."

Meanwhile, Jay Paterno said, his father "is fighting like crazy" as he combats lung cancer. "But it takes some energy out of him like it does anybody else. ...

"He's really anxious to get out there soon and start to tell his side of the story ... and get all the facts out," Jay Paterno said.

The complete video interview is available via ESPN. Jay Paterno also is a columnist for StateCollege.com.
