Joe Paterno, Penn State No Longer to Be Branded Together
by on December 09, 2011 4:14 PM

Licensed, Penn State-branded merchandise will no longer carry Joe Paterno's name, likeness or image, a new agreement reported Friday suggests.

Manufacturers that make such items have 60 days "to sell or dispose of the products" already on hand, university spokeswoman Lisa Powers wrote in an e-mail message.

And "retail establishments can continue to sell any Penn State/Joe Paterno merchandise they have until their supplies are exhausted," she wrote.

Powers said Paterno representatives and Penn State, "by mutual decision," agreed to the change "because he is no longer head coach."

The change also means that any merchandising use of Paterno's name, likeness or image "will no longer be approved through the university," Powers wrote. Likewise, "Penn State will no longer approve any designs featuring his name, likeness or image," she wrote.

Powers said licensing of merchandise that features Paterno will now be handled via JVP Properties, a separate legal entity bearing Paterno's initials.

"Any requests to produce products using Joe Paterno's image" must be directed through JVP Properties, and "not to Penn State Licensing as in the past," according to Powers.

Mary Kay Paterno Hort, now managing the licensing for JVP Properties, could be not reached immediately on Friday. She is a daughter of Joe and Sue Paterno.

Powers, in her e-mail, indicated that at least some of the past revenues from Paterno-featuring products have gone to charity.

Joe Paterno was head football coach at Penn State for 46 years before his dismissal on Nov. 9. Earlier coverage is available via the page linked below.
