John Urschel added another award to his growing collection, becoming a first-team Capital One Academic All-American today by the College Sports information Directors of American (CoSIDA) for the second year in a row. In the last 12 years, ten Nittany Lions have been given this honor. Urschel is the 11th Nittany Lion to earn Academic All-American honors twice.

Urschel earned his degree prior to the start of the season and maintained his 4.0 GPA while working on his second master’s in math education. He finished his first master’s in one year. His first paper called the “Instabilities of the Sun-Jupiter-Asteroid Three Body Problem” was published in 2012 in the journal, Celestial Mechanics and Dynamic Astronomy. He has a second paper accepted for publication, “A Space-Time Multigrid Method for the Numerical Valuation of Barrier Options” in the journal, Communications in Mathematical Finance. He is finishing up two additional papers that will be submitted soon for publishing consideration.

He has done all of this while leading the Nittany Lions on the field as an offensive guard. This season he was a co-captain for the 2013 season and was instrumental in the protection of quarterback Christian Hackenberg. He is still among ten finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.
