Lady Lions Basketball Team Loses in Second Round of NCAA Tournament: Five Seniors Play Last Game

by on March 27, 2013 6:52 AM

The Penn State Lady Lions saw their season come to an abrupt end last night, falling to the Tigers of LSU by a final score of 71-66. Penn State players could not solve the box-in-one defense LSU threw at them.

LSU shut down Maggie Lucas who scored only 9 points on 2-10 shooting. The "one" in that box was Adrienne Webb who not only smothered Lucas at the defensive end, but also scored 29 points in the win.

Penn State got a great performance out of Nikke Greene with a double/double including 16 points and 16 rebounds, leading 3 Lady Lions in double figures. Alex Bentley added 14, all in the first half and Ariel Edwards chipped in with 13 off the bench.

LSU got a great performance from Webb and Bianca Lutley who added 18, including the bucket that gave the Tigers the lead for good with :40 remaining and the Tigers ran off 6 straight points to win the game.

There really wasn't a turning point in the game as it was back and forth the entire contest in a very physical game. The guard play of LSU was the difference using their athleticism to find open shots and convert.

The player of the game for Penn State was Greene with her outstanding numbers in the paint. Greene played superb defense as well limiting the Tiger post players to just 12 of LSU's 71 points.

The stat of the game was perhaps the attendance figures. More than 3,000 LSU fans made the arena sound as if there were 10,000 Tigers fans in the Maravich Center . That gave the Tigers a decided advantage.

What this means for the Lady Lions is that 5 outstanding seniors will have played their final game as Penn Staters. Alex Bentley, Nikke Greene, Mia Nickson, Gizelle Studivent and Marissa Wolfe all saw their college careers come to an end.

Penn State finishes the season with a 26-6 record and despite the untimely loss, will be remembered as a team that brought Penn State back to respectability over the past 2 seasons under the guidance of head coach Coquese Washington.
