Lady Lions Hoops: Maggie Lucas Drafted By The WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury
With the 21st overall pick in the WNBA Draft, the Phoenix Mercury selected standout Lady Lions guard Maggie Lucas. She was projected as high as a late first round pick in some mock drafts, but Lucas fell to the middle of the second round on Monday night.
Lucas had a great senior season with the team, leading the Lady Lions in scoring with 21.0 points per game. She added 4.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game as well. She led the Lady Lions to a 24-8 overall record and a 13-3 Big Ten clip.
She was named a USBWA All-American for her play in the 2013 season and earned Big Ten honors for her strong year, pulling in her second Big Ten Player of the Year award. Lucas was also selected for an All-America honorable mention by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and grabbed a spot on the Senior CLASS Award All-America second team.
She joins a strong program in the Phoenix Mercury, a team that won the WNBA championship in 2007 and 2009 and hopes to get back there with Lucas in the mix. The Mercury are coming off of a 19-15 season in which they finished third in the West conference.
