Lady Lions Upset by Iowa 73-70
Inconsistent play on both ends of the floor doomed the Lady Lion basketball team in Thursday night's contest against Iowa.
Penn State lost to the Hawkeyes at the Bryce Jordan Center, 73-70.
It's the same Iowa team the Lady Lions defeated by 16 points in Iowa City earlier this year.
Iowa came out strong at the offensive end of the floor and used a frustrating matchup zone defense that kept the Lady Lions guessing.
Despite Penn State's problems, the Lady Lions never trailed by more than five points in the first half and thanks to a Maggie Lucas 3-pointer at the buzzer, the teams went to the locker room at halftime tied at 40.
The Lady Lions came out of the locker room late and did not warm up for the second half and that may have had an impact. Penn State turned the ball over on its first three possessions and seemed to have a hard time getting into the game.
Iowa hit its first three shots of the second half and opened up an eight point lead. The Lady Lions showed their resiliency as they came back and actually had a five point lead with about eight minutes to play.
Clutch shooting, tough defense and some incredible play from Iowa freshman Ally Disterhoff led to the Hawkeye victory. Disterhoff was 8-9 from the field, 3-3 from beyond the arc and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line and finished with a game high 24 points.
Lucas led Penn State in scoring with 21 but she scored just five after the intermission. Ariel Edwards added 16, Talia East had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Dara Taylor chipped in with 10.
Penn State hits the road for two games beginning with Ohio State Sunday afternoon. The Lady Lions head to Indiana next Thursday for a game with the Hoosiers.
The Lady Lions are now tied with Michigan State atop the Big Ten standings with 8-2 conference marks. Overall, the Lady Lions are now 17-5.
