Late Winter Storm Could Bring Significant Snowfall

by on March 19, 2015 12:20 PM

Spring may be literally around the corner, but winter is not done with us yet.

The National Weather Service has posted a Winter Weather Advisory beginning at 1 a.m. and continuing until 6 p.m. Friday.

A storm that's now in the deep south is expected to bring some heavy snow to the State College area.

AccuWeather says the storm will probably arrive between 3 and 5 a.m., just in time to slow down the morning commute.

"it's going to be accumulating three to six inches, especially on grassy surfaces," says AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Paul Walker. "There will be less on paved surfaces. ... I can see roads being slushy and commutes being slow [Friday morning], delays for schools is certainly a possibility."

However, the storm's effects are expected to be relatively short-lived. "And by mid- to late-morning road surfaces will be just slushy at worst," predicts Walker who calls this a typical event at this time of the year.

Ironically, spring begins on Friday at 6:51 p.m., so this snowstorm will be the last of the winter.

The storm will be long gone by Saturday when temperatures are expected to rise to near 50 degrees.

Sunday looks to be much chillier. "There's going to be a cold front coming through Saturday night so Sunday is going to be mostly sunny but colder with a high of just 36," adds Walker.

That chilly weather will likely hang on for awhile. Monday's high will be 38 degrees.

Fortunately, there is no additional snow in the forecast but rain, and another cold front, is expected Wednesday into Thursday.
