Lengthy Delays Expected Next Week on North Atherton Street

by on March 14, 2019 11:30 AM

With work under way again for PennDOT's North Atherton Street project, drivers should be prepared for lengthy delays next week as crews work to install a waterline.

The waterline will be installed between the Ridge Avenue and Park Avenue intersections, and PennDOT advises motorists to consider alternate routes. Work will take place during both daytime and nighttime hours the week of March 18-22. Daytime lane closures will limit traffic to one lane inbound and one lane outbound.

Other work next week will include continuing installation of drainage on the right side of Atherton heading toward Park Avenue between West Mitchell Avenue and West Hillcrest Avenue. This also will require daytime lane closures limiting traffic to one lane inbound and one lane outbound.

Additionally, Verizon will continue fiber optic cable splicing on the left side of Atherton heading toward Park Avenue, between Cherry Lane and Park Avenue, resulting in the closure of the far left lane. Work will take place during daytime and nighttime hours.

The speed limit remains reduced to 25 miles per hour through the length of the project, from Aaron Drive to Park Avenue. Drivers are reminded to use caution and to use both lanes to merge points. Property owners are encouraged to approach workers if they need assistance entering or exiting their properties.

Work on the North Atherton Street project will continue through the fall and includes relocation of utility, water and sewer lines,  drainage improvements, curbing, sidewalks, ADA ramps, traffic signal upgrades, a new concrete median and paving.

The next phase of the project will begin in 2020, with work taking place from Park Avenue to Westerly Parkway.
