Letter: Friedenberg Will Listen to Voters

on April 04, 2018 4:00 AM

Marc Friedenberg is running for the U.S. House of Representative. He is now out there, talking to people, asking them what their problems are, and listening to them. He knows that outside the bubble of prosperity that has formed around Penn State (and even inside it) there are people who are suffering, who want their story to be known, and want some solution to be found.

They are workers whose standard of living has gone down, as unions are under assault, and those who have lost jobs due to the technological changes that demand a different set of skills. They are those without adequate health coverage, or those who fear that their small rural hospital may close leaving them stranded. They are the victims of the opioid epidemic, a drug crisis fueled not by criminal dope dealers, but by very legal pharmaceutical companies who pushed sales of painkillers to doctors and patients alike. They are those who may be denied a proper education, and whose future is darkened by it. They are those who worry about the environment, not just on a global level, but more locally, where the only spot that they can afford to go on vacation is threatened by environmental degradation.

They all need solutions, and some idea of what can be done.

Marc is listening. He does not answer with platitudes, or with talking points concocted in some think tank. He considers the problem and what can be done about it. The solutions he offers will be tailored to the complaints he hears. He will think long and hard, and will work relentlessly on our behalf.

The people in the 12th district deserve Marc Friedenberg.
