Letter: Marc Friedenberg Offers Real Leadership

on February 11, 2018 4:00 AM

I enthusiastically support Marc Friedenberg’s candidacy for Pennsylvania’s 5th Congressional District. Marc’s priorities — jobs, healthcare, education, and our environment, which includes addressing climate change — are in line with my own.

Scientific study of air bubbles trapped in ancient ice buried deep within Earth’s ice sheets reveals that atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide are greater than at any time during the last 400,000 years. The relentless rise of carbon dioxide after the Industrial Revolution closely matches the burning of fossil fuels, leaving no doubt that human activity has (and is) changing our atmosphere.

Carbon dioxide has a warming effect, a principle dating back more than a century (military research conducted during and after World War II got it exactly right). Quoting the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), “Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal.”

Since 2001, 17 of the past 18 years have been the warmest on record. Moreover, Earth’s five warmest years on record occurred since 2010.

Snow and ice have diminished; sea levels have risen. The number of heavy-precipitation events has increased in a number of regions, and the potential impacts on human and natural systems are daunting.

And yet, Glenn Thompson, who has received money from the fossil-fuel industry, has voted:

•  Yes to barring EPA from regulating greenhouse gases. (April 2011)
•  No to enforcing limits on carbon dioxide. (June 2009)
•  Yes to exempting greenhouse gases from the Clean Air Act rules. (January 2009)

We need visionary leadership. That’s why I support Marc Friedenberg.
