Letter: Marc Friedenberg Would Fight to Restore Balance

on February 01, 2018 4:00 AM

We need to restore balance between the rights of the rich and the poor. This isn’t a new problem, it’s perennial. It’s the reason the ancient Jews celebrated the Jubilee every 50 years and redistributed wealth. In the United States, we’ve occasionally redressed the balance without resorting to excessive violence, as during the fight against monopolies at the beginning of the 20th century, or by providing help to the dispossessed during the Great Depression in the 1930s, or by extending the rights of citizenship more broadly during the civil rights struggles of the 1960s.

But for the last 50 years the corporations and the rich have subverted the U.S. system for their benefit: by keeping the minimum wage too low to support a family; giving Wall Street and hedge funds excessive freedom to manipulate markets without requiring that they pay fair taxes on their gains; changing patent rules so that the pharma companies can exploit the sick without facing real market competition.

What’s next? Congress is once again considering changes to Medicaid, Medicare and Social Security in ways that will make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

Rep. Glenn Thompson has demonstrated by his voting record that he stands with the rich on these issues. It’s time for a change. That’s why I’m supporting Marc Friedenberg in his quest to provide better representation for the PA 5th Congressional District. I hope that you’ll check out his positions at
