Little Lions Earn Indoor Track and Field All-State Honors

State College picked up a coach of the year award and six all-state honors for the indoor season from the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association this week.

Artie Gilkes was named boys' coach of the year after his team won the Pennsylvania indoor championship on Feb. 24.

Senior Stanley Hamilton earned first-team honors in the the triple jump after winning the state title with a mark of 48-03.25. His brother, Lance Hamilton, was named second-team after winning silver in the triple jump at 48-01.00.

The State College boys and girls teams both had athletes earn all-state in the pole vault, with seniors Lyndsey Reed and Luke Knipe both named to the third teams. Reed took fourth place at the state championship, clearing 12-0, despite competing with an ankle injury. Knipe won the bronze with a 15-0 clearance.

State College's boys 4X800 relay team of Joe Messner, Marc Allerheiligen, Henry Ballard and Zachary DeCarmine also was named third-team all-state after taking third at the state championship with a time of 7:54.94.

Senior Jake Hefkin received honorable mention in the long jump. He claimed fourth place at the state championship with a 22-04.5 mark.

State College's outdoor season begins on March 26 at home against Mifflin County.
