A State High graduate and teacher in the State College Area School District for more than two decades, Paul Heasley will be honored as this year's State College Area High School Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus.

The alumni association will honor Heasley at a reception on Thursday, prior to the State High Homecoming parade.

Heasley is a State College native who graduated from State High in 1975. An award-winning agricultural sciences teacher in the high school's Career and Technical Center, he has taught in the district for 24 years and has served as chapter advisor for the Little Lions FFA for 36 years.

He has encouraged youth civic and industry involvement throughout his career and has won numerous teaching and professional awards. In 2014 Heasley was named Outstanding Young Farmer Advisor by the Pennsylvania Young Farmers’ Association and in 2015 the Centre County Grange Fair honored him with the Friend of the Fair award for his work as a junior livestock committee member.

Among his accomplishments as FFA advisor, Heasley has secured 55 grants worth more than $500,000 to help students have practical experiences with agriculture. Their efforts growing, making and selling food have benefited local nonprofit organizations such as food banks, Meals on Wheels and Centre County Youth Service Bureau.

As a teacher, Heasley prepares State High students for science careers in a range of agricultural fields. He also has instructed and evaluated hundreds of Penn State agricultural education students over the past 19 years.

Heasley said his greatest reward as an educator is the relationships he has formed with students and their families.

“What is most important to me is my community and the students we all help to become leaders for our future,” he said in 2015, according to a district news release.
