Memorial Field Renovations Should be Done in Time for Football Season

The latest update on construction work at Memorial Field suggests the project is running pretty much on schedule. The work should be wrapped up in time for Little Lion football this fall.

The school district's Director of Physical Plant, Ed Poprik says "The sinkhole project is 99-percent complete and should be done anytime now. The west bleacher project is progressing fine, with a substantial completion date of August 23."

Tuesday night the State College Area School Board approved a $52,374 project for temporary bleacher construction on east grandstand area. Part of the east grandstand was removed for sinkhole repair. The temporary bleachers can be taken down and moved to another location when the east grandstand project is undertaken according to Poprik.

The 20-row assembly that's being purchased includes seating for 546 people. That means there will be 261 fewer seats available. It will cost around $10,000 for installation.

"There is a master plan that includes massive renovations to the east stands, including the addition of rest rooms and locker rooms," Poprik said.  "The final design, timing and funding for this phase is uncertain, so that is why we are installing temporary at this point."

The initial project was approved by the State College Area Board of Directors by an 8-1 vote this past April. Construction crews are currently in the process of replacing the bleachers, wall and fencing along the entire west side of the stadium which runs along Fraser Street. Once completed there will be added seating and better access to the seating areas. Mid-State Construction is currently overseeing the site after winning the construction bid of $2,347,087.

The concrete sidewalk along Fraser Street will be replaced with a brick sidewalk according to Poprik. Crews had been working for the past several weeks to fix and repair a sinkhole located underneath a portion of the east bleachers.  Once workers had dug deep enough, pipes were installed to drain away water from the site.

Plans to resurface Memorial Field are slated for a date to be determined down the road.

In October of 2012, Poprik gave StateCollege.com a tour of Memorial Field. Check it out for yourself and see what's really going on in – and underneath – the field.
