Mother's Day Menu: Take Your Mom Out For a Special Meal
If Mom is coming to visit State College this Mother’s Day, or Mom lives in State College, you need a game plan.
Flowers and a card are nice, but nothing says "thanks Mom" like taking her out to eat. Celebrations are all about the multisensory experience of eating, and State College can deliver the goods.
We've put together some dining suggestions. Do a little of this, a little of that, or if you really want to get on your mother’s good side, do the whole list! If you’re doing the whole list, you may want to sign up for the 4th Annual Bridge of Hope Mother’s Day Walk/5k Fun Run the day before Mother’s Day—just to clear out some calorie space.
One of the Penn Stater’s two in-hotel restaurants, The Gardens, will be offering a special Mother’s Day brunch buffet this year from 10am to 4pm on May 12. If you’re taking mom and a pack of children out to eat, this is the place for you. It will be $23.95 for adults and $12 for children aged 6-12. Kids under 5 eat free. The buffet includes salmon, caviar, lamb, roasted round of beef and much more. Reservations are recommended at 814-863-5090.
Harrison’s, just outside of State College on East College Avenue, is also bringing out Mother’s Day specials that include lobster wrapped scallops, grilled mahi mahi and asparagus & ricotta stuffed chicken. Harrison’s says that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year and that reservations fill up fast, so call soon to save a spot! Reservations can be made at 814-237-4422.
If your mother is visiting, the Tavern is where you go to feel at home. The location can’t be beat and the food is great—with unlimited sides. Their buffet is open from 10:15 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. It features a carving station with prime rib, cedar plank salmon, crab cakes and an omelet station. It costs $19.50 for adults, $9.75 for children under 14 and children under 5 eat free.
Tip: Try the Kahlua Parfait!
Herwig’s Austrian Bistro
Take mom here—but know that you’re treating yourself. Herwig’s Austrian Bistro was voted State College’s Best Ethnic Restaurant eight years in a row. With the motto “Where Bacon is an herb!” it is easy to see why it is so well-liked. Dark chocolate covered bacon, bacon cheesecake, bacon ice cream—Herwig’s really loves bacon. As long as your mother isn’t a vegetarian, she’ll really like you for taking her there.
Duffy’s Tavern, the traditionally decorated ex-stagecoach stop, nestled in historic Boalsburg, is the perfect stop for a casual lunch or a full dinner. Duffy’s has two menus: a tavern menu and a fine-dining menu. The tavern menu offers burgers, specialty sandwiches, salads and soups. Filet mignon, sautéed veal and snow crab are some of the mouth-watering entrées, sandwiched between palate cleansing rounds of sauerkraut and sorbet.
