on September 25, 2008 8:26 AM
According to a press release from the Department of Environmental Protection, the Mount Nittany Medical Center was fined $17,500 by the DEP for violating the state radiation protection regulations that are designed to the protect the public's health and safety.

Southcentral Regional Director of the DEP, Rusty Diamond, said the violations occurred over a 12-month period and included radiation therapists inadvertently delivering a dose of radiation to the wrong patient and, on two occassions, to incorrect parts of patients' bodies.

Contract employees performing work on the roof of the medical facility may have also been exposed to radiation levels greater than public dose limits.

Mount Nittany Medical Center paid the fines earlier this month and has taken corrective action against the problems and is in the process of hiring an additional management position to oversee the radiation therapists in the oncology department.
