State College Area School Board on Monday approved the hiring of the next principal for Corl Street Elementary.

Kelly Mark, currently the K-12 assistant principal for Penns Valley Area School District, will succeed Corl Street Principal Charlotte Zmyslo, who is retiring in June. Mark's first day will be June 17.

While it will be a new role for Mark, it will also be a homecoming. She spent 14 years as a State College Area faculty member, including one year as a second grade teacher at Corl Street, before taking her current post at Penns Valley last year.

“It is an honor to come back to State College to serve in a leadership role in this way,” Mark said in a news release. “Corl Street is a tight-knit neighborhood school, and I’m really looking forward to being a part of that community.”

After graduating from Penn State in 2004 with a degree in elementary and kindergarten education, Mark joined Radio Park Elementary as a teacher and taught there until 2011, with the exception of her one year at Corl Street. From 2011 to 2015, she was a professional development associate in SCASD's Professional Development School partnership with the Penn State College of Education, where she supervised teacher interns, taught methods courses and planned professional development.

In 2015, Mark returned to Radio Park as a third grade teacher and a year later was selected by the SCASD Leadership Institute as one of 28 faculty members to participate in professional development sessions with district leaders.

Mark earned a master's degree and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction from Penn State. She received the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award from the National Association of Professional Development Schools in 2017.

At Penns Valley, Mark has overseen the district's counseling department and assisted the elementary and high school principals. She said she is grateful for her time and experiences at Penns Valley.

As Mark begins her tenure as Corl Street principal, the school will be marking a new beginning in another way. The major renovations and expansion the school has been undergoing for more than a year will be completed in time for the start of the 2018-19 school year.

“I just can’t wait to see the students and their families and get started in this beautiful new space,” she said. “It’s going to be great.”
