Next Paterno Legacy Series Beer Headed to Distributors

no description

After a first edition that exceeded sales expectations, Duquesne Brewing Company in Latrobe and Jay Paterno have teamed up for the next in the Paterno Legacy Series beers honoring Paterno’s late father and legendary Penn State football coach Joe Paterno.

The new beer is a light beer and will be shipped to distributors starting Monday. The beer is packaged with new artwork and commemorates the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno’s first year as Penn State’s head coach.

‘Like last year we wanted a beer that would be good on a warm day or for an all-day tailgate,’ Jay Paterno said. ‘This year it is a light beer — but unlike many other light beers it is made with European Hops and two-row barley which gives it a fuller taste. And it comes in at just 96 calories and low carbs too so it won’t slow you down. We had a series of discussions with Duquesne and after trying a couple of things we came to this decision. I’ve had a number of friends who have tried it and they really liked it.’

The first Paterno Legacy Series beer released last year near the start of football season was an American lager. Paterno said they went into that first edition hoping to sell about 10,000 cases. They ended up moving 120,000 12-packs.

The initial run on the new edition is about 15,000 12-packs and it has sold out to distributors across Pennsylvania.

Paterno, a StateCollege.com columnist, said he thinks fans will appreciate the beer, as well as the new can art, which also features quotes by Joe Paterno.

‘It is a completely new design that I think people will really enjoy,’ said Paterno, who was an assistant coach on his father’s staff for 17 seasons. We felt that as the 50th anniversary of his first game as head coach approaches this fall we wanted to really highlight Joe Paterno’s role as an educator even more so than as a coach.  Although we kept the case design similar the can itself is completely different.’

Like any of the licensing done by the Paterno family, part of the proceeds from the beer go to the Paterno Foundation, which supports a number of different causes. The foundation also will be the beer sponsor for the July 4 Freedom Ride Bike Ride in Tyrone which raises money for the VA Medical Center in Altoona.
