Obama To Honor Penn State Volleyball, Fencing Teams

on August 17, 2010 8:52 AM

The Penn State 2010 women's volleyball team and men's and women's fencing squads will be honored at the White House next month, the Obama administration announced.

They are among more than 30 college-level teams invited to a Sept. 13 reception on Pennsylvania Avenue, where President Obama will recognize championship winners and other top student-athletes in the NCAA, according to a White House statement.

President George W. Bush started the tradition.

In December, the Penn State women's volleyball team won its third straight national title -- a new record. In March, the Penn State fencers won the national title in their sport. It's the fifth national title won by the university's fencing team in the past decade.

Few other details about the White House event were immediately available. Penn State has had other sports teams -- including men's and women's volleyball teams -- attend the annual receptions within the past couple years, according to the university.

"In association with this event, various championship teams and players will be recognized for their efforts to give back to their communities, continuing an effort begun by President Obama of sports champions being commended for service as part of a White House visit," the administration's press statement reads.
