One Injured in Apartment Fire

One woman was injured and South Atherton Street was briefly closed because of an apartment building fire Wednesday morning.

Alpha Fire Company responded at 8:33 a.m. to the fire at a one-story building at 725 S. Atherton St. and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish it with tank water, assistant chief Rusty Scheiner said. The fire was under control by 9 a.m. and South Atherton Street was reopened shortly after.

A woman who was in the apartment where the fire occurred was already out of the building when responders arrived. She was transported to Mount Nittany Medical Center for burn injuries and smoke inhalation, though her current status was not available.

Scheiner said the fire was contained to one unit. Residents of other apartments in the building were home at the time and all self-evacuated. After the building was ventilated they were allowed back into their apartments.

Centre Region fire marshals were on the scene investigating the cause of the fire.

Centre LifeLink EMS and State College Police also responded.
