Though COVID-19 has altered plans for Memorial Day in Boalsburg this year, it won’t stop the community from honoring the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, just as it has done for 156 years.

Flowers will be left in on a table under the tent in the Boalsburg cemetery for residents and visitors to use to decorate the graves Saturday through Monday. Visitors are asked to use proper social distancing practices and follow masking guidelines.

On Monday, May 25, the 156th Walk to the Cemetery and 6 p.m. service will be held virtually. A small, invite-only crowd will gather at the cemetery to bring Hope Through A History — a look at the unique history of Boalsburg and Memorial Day traditions.

Members of the public are encouraged to watch this special service on the Harris Township Facebook page to watch this special service.

The event will also be recorded by C-NET for broadcast at a later date. The township also is sharing Memorial Day moments — historical tidbits from the last 156 years — on its Facebook each day leading up to Memorial Day. These moments will share historical tidbits from the last 156 years.

The public is encouraged to share their Memorial Day memories in the comments.

With its annual carnival cancelled due to COVID-19, the Boalsburg Fire Company still plans to hold one of their Memorial Day Weekend traditions with its annual chicken dinner sale. According to a post from the fire company on Tuesday, however, because of pre-orders, the dinners have sold out.

A handful of organizers of local Memorial Day events provided information concerning their particular services. They are as follows:

- The annual ceremonies performed at 21 cemeteries by Keystone Post 444 American Legion have been canceled, and in their stead, a single ceremony honoring the 852 deceased comrades in the post’s jurisdiction will be held at 10 a.m. on May 25 at Fairview Cemetery, West Main Street, Millheim.

A Civil War cannon salute will be rendered by Hampton’s Battery F members Bob Brown, and his son, Jim. The public is invited, and social distancing practices and face mask requirements will be observed;

- Bellefonte American Legion Post 33, Pleasant Gap American Legion Post 867 and Bellefonte VFW Post 1600 have canceled Memorial Day services.

Services at the Centre County Courthouse, Meyers Cemetery, Jewish/Hebrew Cemetery, Zion Cemetery, Snydertown Cemetery, Hublersburg Cemetery, Jacksonville Cemetery, Pleasant Gap Lutheran Cemetery, Quaker Cemetery, Catholic Cemetery and the Union Cemetery have also been canceled;

- Services at Advent Cemetery in Boggs Township, along Moose Run Road, are canceled.

Centre County Administrator Margaret Gray said the county's Office of Veterans Affairs packed and distributed 12,500 flags to approximately 20 organizations around Centre County who placed them at grave sites in 133 cemeteries across the county.
