Paterno: Penn State Working for Continuity with Two-Quarterback System

on October 18, 2011 1:31 PM

Now into the 2011 season's second half, Penn State has tried to establish some continuity with its dual-quarterback approach, football Coach Joe Paterno said Tuesday.

"We're still at the stage where we really have two quarterbacks," he told reporters in his weekly press conference. "It's bad enough what they have to go through from the media and the fans as (to whether) one is better than the other. So we've tried to get in some kind of situation where there's some continuity to it."

Paterno said the team has done "a decent job" with quarterback Rob Bolden starting the games and his peer Matt McGloin taking over later on.

And so "I've been reluctant to change it," the coach went on. "You change it -- you don't know what you're going to get."

Further, Paterno said, he couldn't pick Bolden over McGloin -- or vice versa -- right now. For now, the team's quarterbacking will continue "pretty much the same way," he said.

Among Paterno's other comments Tuesday:

  • Paterno said he thinks his health overall is "pretty good." A cart -- a golf cart, apparently -- is still available to him in case he gets tired during two-hour practice sessions, he said. The 84-year-old coach has been recovering from arm and hip injuries he suffered during an August practice session.
  • As the season continues, Paterno said, the team is "just going to have to play hard and do a little better in taking the ball away, that kind of thing. Make sure our kicking game stays good. Those kinds of things will be important as we come down the stretch."

The official Penn State sports website,, will post a full transcript of Paterno's remarks later Tuesday. The Nittany Lions are 6-1 so far this season and will play Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., on Saturday.
