Penn State trustees "will be looking for" the resignation Wednesday of university President Graham Spanier, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

The university Board of Trustees is expected to hold an emergency meeting Wednesday night, according to the newspaper.

Earlier, on Tuesday night, a source with direct knowledge of board activity told StateCollege.com that support for Spanier, at least among some trustees, is waning.

So is board support for football Coach Joe Paterno, according to the knowledgeable source. Paterno announced Wednesday that he will retire at the end of this football season.

The news comes as a former assistant football coach, Jerry Sandusky, and two top university administrators face criminal charges. Sandusky is accused of a prolonged pattern of child sex abuse; the administrators are accused of failure to report and perjury in connection with the Sandusky case.

In other developments Wednesday:

• The highly controversial Westboro Baptist Church announced that it will picket outside Beaver Stadium on Saturday, when Penn State is scheduled to play Nebraska, as Onward State reports.

• An artist who created a popular mural in downtown State College has covered up an image of Sandusky in the piece, as the Collegian reports.

• According to a Chronicle of Higher Education report, the university trustees have told Spanier not to make any statements to the media.

• Onward State has video footage of a student rally Tuesday night in the "Beaver Canyon" part of State College.
