Penn State football will start the 2017 season ranked at No. 6 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The preseason poll was released Thursday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions are the second highest Big Ten team in the rankings with Ohio State coming in at No. 2 and Michigan falling in at No. 9. Penn State is ranked just ahead of Washington, the team that narrowly edged the Nittany Lions out of the College Football Playoffs in 2016, and just behind Clemson.

USC, Florida State, Ohio State and Alabama claim the Top 4 with the Tide coming in at No.1.

All told Penn State will face eight teams currently ranked or receiving votes in the Coaches Poll. The Nittany Lions will face Pittsburgh in Week 2, the first team to fall into that category, as the Panthers are seven spots out of the Top 25 with 45 points in the poll.

Northwestern, Iowa, Nebraska, Maryland and Michigan State also received votes in the poll but are not ranked.

The AP Top 25 is due out August 21.
