Penn State Athletics: Barbour Set To Sign Contract Extension As Athletic Director

ORLANDO, Fla.- Penn State Athletic Director Sandy Barbour is slated to sign a contract extension, she said Monday morning in Orlando.

“This is my last stop,” Barbour said while addressing a media contingent ahead of Tuesday's Citrus Bowl between Penn State and Kentucky. “Where would I want to go that’s a better opportunity, a better fit for me than Penn State? And this next contract will certainly help me do that.”

Barbour, who was hired in July of 2014, is currently in the final year of her five-year deal that officially expires on Aug. 31, 2019. She is paid $700,000 per year under her current contract with additional annual bonuses worth up to $200,000.

While the new contract is yet to be signed, Barbour expects to hear from the Board of Trustees “early in 2019.” The next publicly scheduled board meeting is slated for Feb. 22 and 23.

Barbour's contract is the latest, and perhaps final, of marquee extensions at Penn State. University President Eric Barron was extended for three more years this past May. Football coach James Franklin was extended in 2017 and men's basketball coach Patrick Chambers inked a new four-year deal in May.

“We knew it would get done,” Barbour said of her own new contract.

Barbour added she is already in the process of finding a replacement for Deputy Director of Athletics Phil Esten, who is slated to take over as athletic director at the University of St Thomas. Per a previous new release, Esten, who is in Orlando, will start his new role full-time following the conclusion of the Penn State football season.

Esten worked hand-in-hand with Barbour during the formation of the often talked about, but seemingly slow-moving Penn State facilities master plan.
