Penn State Athletics: Nearing Last Year Of Deal, Barbour Looks To Ink Extension

Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour is hoping to work towards her own extension she stated on Thursday. Barbour's current contract expires August 31 of 2019 meaning she is fast approaching the final 12 months of that deal.

Barbour signed on as Athletic Director in 2014 inking a five-year deal worth $700,000 per year with additional yearly bonuses worth up to $200,000 per year. $100,000 for athlete performance and $100,000 for annual retention.

"We are in conversation," Barbour said of an extension. "I very much would like an extension and have every indication that there will be one. I'm going to do this job as long as I can do it and do it the right way and do it with enthusiasm and I hope that's a long, long time."

Generally speaking Barbour's tenure at Penn State has been an uneventful one, although she can be credited for much of the backing in the improvements of Penn State football's facilities and increased payroll. Barbour is currently championing an ambitious facilities master plan that includes multiple renovations, upgrades and construction of new and old buildings on campus.

Beaver Stadium is also slated to be renovated outside the initial five-year window of the first phase of the master plan, but there is little indication of when that might begin or if fundraising interests are such to make that plan feasible.

Regardless, Barbour hopes to be a part of those conversations moving forward, and by all indications will be once her extension is finalized.
