Penn State Athletics: Only 3 New Positives in Latest Round of COVID Testing

by on October 14, 2020 5:15 PM

For the second straight testing period Penn State Athletics is reporting just three positive COVID-19 test results from student-athletes.

Over the testing period of Oct. 3-9, Penn State administered 1,302 tests with five of those tests still pending. As per usual, student-athletes are tested on a daily basis per Big Ten testing standards and in turn, total tests do not equate to the number of student-athletes that have been tested.

The Big Ten's daily testing period began at the end of September and all of Penn State Athletics' testing results are reflected in the university's COVID-19 testing dashboard.

Wednesday's news is a continuation of a downward trend over the past month following a two-week spike in positive results. After reporting 48 and 50 cases the first two weeks in September, the numbers have dropped over the following weeks to 20, 16, 3 and 3.

Centre County as a whole reported 19 new cases and one new death on Wednesday while Penn State at-large reported 196 new cases in its semi-weekly update on Tuesday.

The new positives reported in the university's Tuesday report bring the the campus community's total to 3,362 since Aug. 7, though only 405 are currently considered active.

Penn State football is set to open the Big Ten season at Indiana next Saturday, while the Nittany Lions will return the following week to host Ohio State in a Week 2 clash. Athletes that test positive for COVID-19 are required to sit out 21 days before being allowed to return to play. Certain positive testing rates among programs would trigger the cancelation of an upcoming game.
