Penn State Athletics Reports 1 Positive Following Latest Round of COVID-19 Testing

by on August 26, 2020 1:19 PM

Penn State Athletics reported one COVID-19 positive Wednesday following 261 tests conducted from August 17-21 on. Nine tests are still pending.

Total tests are not a reflection of total individuals tested as the Big Ten requires several sports — including football — to test athletes at least twice a week, this procedure is still ongoing even as the conference canceled its fall sports season.

The athletic department has reported 10 total positives out of 1,051 tests since student-athletes began returning to campus in June. For the last two reporting weeks, just two student-athletes have tested positive out of 491 tests administered.

Last week Penn State Athletics announced it would now report COVID-19 testing results once a week after previously reporting testing results every two weeks. Additionally, Penn State no longer reports aggregate multi-week totals and instead only releases test results from the previous week's testing period.

Wednesday's release is the second under this format. For the span of August 10-14, Penn State conducted 230 COVID-19 tests of student-athletes with one student testing positive.

Prior to the reporting change, Penn State had released the results of 560 COVID-19 tests with eight student-athletes testing positive.

Centre County added two additional COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. Over the past two weeks the county has had a moderate increase of 52 new cases, for a total of 429 since late March.
